Alexander Awareness Week April 1st-7th
NICE guidelines (NG71) recommend considering the Alexander Technique for people with Parkinson's disease with movement and balance problems.
This recommendation was based on the findings from a randomised control trial which found twenty-four 1.1 Alexander Technique lessons provided significant and sustained benefits for people with Parkinson’s disease at 6months' follow up (Stallibrass et al. 2002).
Research findings:
People who had Alexander Technique lessons reported improvements in balance, posture and walking, as well as increased coping ability and reduced stress. The Alexander Technique group was comparatively less depressed than the control group. Other reported benefits included feeling more hopeful and positive.
Natalie has completed postgraduate Poise Project CPD training in working with people with Parkinson's disease to enable her to tailor her Alexander lessons in her teaching practice in Seaford.
