Thinking about Alexander Technique lessons?

Many people arrive here after hearing about the Alexander Technique from a friend, colleague or healthcare professional.

You may be curious about what lessons involve, whether they are relevant to you, or simply want to find out what a first lesson is like.

This page is here to help you decide.

What happens in a lesson?

Alexander Technique lessons are practical and individual.

We work with simple everyday activities such as sitting, standing, walking, and other movements relevant to your daily life.

Rather than exercises or treatment, lessons focus on developing awareness of habitual patterns of tension and movement, and exploring more efficient and comfortable ways of using yourself.

Lessons are adapted to you and proceed at a comfortable pace.

Is this for you?

People come for Alexander Technique lessons for many different reasons.

Some notice tension, stiffness, or discomfort in everyday movement. Others are interested in improving coordination, balance, and ease in how they use themselves.

Some examples include people experiencing:

  • Muscle or joint pain during thier regular activities
  • Hypermobility-related movement patterns and coordination challenges
  • Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions affecting movement and balance
  • Stress-related physical tension and habitual holding patterns
  • A general interest in reducing excessive effort in movement

You don’t need a diagnosis or specific condition to begin lessons.

Many people simply come because they are curious about how they move and would like to feel more comfort in everyday life. Other's arrive after hearing about Alexander Technique from someone.

What happens in a first lesson?

A first lesson is an opportunity to experience the Alexander Technique for yourself and see whether it feels relevant.

There is no expectation to continue beyond a single lesson.

You are welcome to ask questions, discuss what has brought you, and explore simple everyday movements such as sitting or standing.

Many people find that the best way to understand the approach is through direct experience rather than explanation.

Other people may wish to delve deeper into the work and book a series of consecutive lessons.   "I have tried physio, Feldenkrais, Rolfing, physio, pilates, yoga but out of all of them Alexander technique is the only thing that has made a difference to my posture. I can definitely see improvements. I have had Alexander sessions before from another teacher but Natalie’s sessions were so much better as I could understand what I needed to do this time."
